Burbank, Calif., July 18, 2013 -- The Right Stuff -- director Philip Kaufman’s (Unbearable Lightness of Being) inspiring, epic motion picture about the birth of the U.S. space program that won four Academy Awards® for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing (1983) marks its 30th anniversary with a Blu-ray™ debut November 5. Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward and Jeff Goldblum head the stellar ensemble cast of The Right Stuff, which is based on Tom Wolfe’s best-selling book chronicling the exciting early years of the United States’ race to conquer the final frontier, and the daredevil test pilots who ultimately became the first Americans in space. Kaufman also wrote the screenplay for the film which Pauline Kael of The New Yorker called “astonishingly entertaining and great fun.”

The Right Stuff chronicles NASA’s early efforts to put a man in space and win a crucial public relations and morale building victory over the Soviet Union, who were first to successfully launch a satellite (Sputnik) and the first to put a man in orbit around the earth. The film juxtaposes the daring feats of test pilots such as Chuck Yeager (Shepard), who shows he has “the right stuff” by breaking the sound barrier, with the accomplishments of the Mercury 7 astronauts and their wives who struggle to maintain a brave front at home.

Based on Alexis Nolent's French graphic novel, Du Plomb Dans La Tete, “Bullet to the Head” tells the story of a New Orleans hit man (Stallone) and a DC cop (Kang) who form an unlikely alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners.





***MOVIE REVIEW***


Fun, dumb and easy to digest action from one of the all time great action stars in Sylvester Stallone. It is really something to see the shape he has kept himself in over the years and is in better condition than most 20 & 30 year old people in the world. Stallone plays the character of hit man Jimmy Bobo as a bad ass with charisma to spare. There are plenty of loud and bloody shootouts. This is a fun summer rental and a purchase for some. 7.5/10


***VIDEO QUALITY***


Bullet To The Head arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. - A consistently dirty and gritty looking transfer that is faithful to the way the film was intended to look. Black levels were deep but that leads to crushing in certain scenes. Colors run from moments of blandness to richly saturated and bold colors. Fine detail was good for the most part with striking close ups but I did notice some instances of softness. There is a fine layer of grain visible if you look for it. 7.5/10


***AUDIO QUALITY***


Audio is provided by a DTS -HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - This track is a big, loud punch to the face. Bass was deep and powerful rattling the room with explosions and thumps in the chest from gunfire. Surrounds are engaged almost constantly with excellent clarity in directional effects. Despite all the chaos happening on screen dialogue was crisp and well balanced in the mix. 9/10

42 Blu-ray Review

***SYNOPSIS***


Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. “42” tells the story of two men – the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey – whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball.

In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking – ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.





***MOVIE REVIEW***


42 is an intimate look at the world of Jackie Robinson during his historic addition to the Brooklyn Dodgers as the first African American to play for a Major League team. Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of the Hall of Fame player is subtle and perfect. The tough GM Branch Rickey is well represented by Harrison Ford. The baseball scenes were smartly directed but the heart of the film is the obstacles Robinson must face on his eventual path to being a legendary sports figure but more importantly a great American. This film is well worth a purchase. 8.5/10


***VIDEO QUALITY***


42 arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 2.40:1. - I was surprised to learn that 42 was shot digitally. The warmth and life in the image was very filmic. Colors were natural and saturation was sublime. Deep greens, striking blues, and crisp whites all looked great. Fine detail was in a word, excellent. From the precise clothing of the era to beauty of the baseball fields everything was crystal clear. Black levels were deep but never sacrificed shadow delineation. No signs of DNR or Edge Enhancement were noticed. This transfer is a real crowd pleaser. Play ball! 9.5/10


***AUDIO QUALITY***


Audio is provided by a DTS -HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - This track was pretty much flawless. From the excitement of the games to more dramatic scenes everything was crystal clear and precise. Surrounds help create a sense of being in the middle of the baseball action but also in quieter moments with subtle environmental effects to give a feeling of being in that scene. The touching score is robust and accompanied by some really strong LFE that never flutters. Dialogue was always crisp and clean. No pops, cracks or hisses to be heard. 10/10
