Superman: The Movie arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray with a 2160p presentation. - There will be many people expecting a smooth and slick look due to the disc being 4K. This is not a disc to demonstrate to your friends eye-popping colors and vivid , crisp highlights. What this presentation offers is the best looking home release for the original theatrical cut of this iconic film. Where there were issues with black levels and shadow depth we now have a nice boost in contrast and overall depth and dimension to the image. Superman's red and blue outfit remains deeply saturated and the same shade throughout versus previous releases where the cape and pants would waver from red to almost pink and back to red again. Yes, there is a healthy amount of grain that looks beautiful and natural.
There are moments of softness and the opening scenes on Krypton are full of grain and what some may think is noise but in reality is the way the film was shot and the effects were achieved for that time. I want to credit Warner for not taking away the grain and adding a waxy edge enhanced look to try to artificially enhance the movie to look glossier like modern blockbusters. 8.5/10
Audio is provided by a Dolby Atmos track. - Please not the disc plays with the default Dolby Digital 5.1 track. You must select the Atmos track from the sub-menu. This newly mixed Atmos track sounds heroic. John Williams brilliant score sounds the best it's ever been. There are some fun but not overdone surround and height effects that add to the enjoyment. Bass was deep if not as low as some more recent movies there was a good amount of rumbling during the final chapters as well as the destruction of the planet Krypton earlier in the film. Dialogue reproduction was excellent. 9/10
