The film that blew audiences away is back and bigger than ever with more than two hours special feature material that will give viewers even more reasons to “Bring Him Home.” Audience everywhere can journey back to Mars with the all-new extended cut of the 7-time Academy Award nominated space film The Martian coming to Digital HD, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on June 7, 2016.
The extended edition includes an extended cut featuring 10 minutes of brand new footage not shown in theaters as well as more than two hours of behind-the-scenes content. Included in the new material is audio commentary by renowned director Ridley Scott, writer/executive producer Drew Goddard and author of the novel Andy Weir. There is also a documentary of the science behind recreating Mars for the film; interviews with NASA specialists and engineers; and a Q&A panel discussion about the planned journey to mars featuring commentary from NASA experts.
The Martian is one of the most talked about films of the year and has been named one of the best movies of the year by groups such as National Board of Review, which also awarded top honors to Ridley Scott for Best Director.
Director Ridley Scott does some of his finest work with The Martian. It was already a perfect crowd-pleaser that mixed emotion, jaw-dropping visuals and intelligent humor. Matt Damon continues to be one of the most likeable and believable actors of his generation.
This new extended edition of the film adds in over 10 minutes of new footage. Scott is known for some of the most fascinating extended cuts in the history of home video but these scenes don't add anything incredibly revealing. What is put back in are some nice character beats and some extended moments to other scenes. If you have yet to pick up The Martian then this is the perfect opportunity to do so with all the bells and whistles added on to it. 9.5/10
The Martian: Extended Edition arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray with a 2160p transfer in the aspect ratio of 2.40:1 - Mars may be a desolate planet but it's deep red desert like scenery is gorgeously recreated here. The HDR helps to make colors that were already beautifully saturated on the standard Blu-ray look like you are there in all it's vividness. Fine detail is stunning. I was constantly amazed at the ability to make me feel as though the image was living right in front of me and I wasn't watching at home any more, I was right there with Mark Watney trying to science the sh** out of this Mars problem.
Black levels were rich and inky, while shadow delineation was perfectly balanced. Overall this is an absolute must own if you just got a new 4K set up. 10/10
Audio is provided by a Dolby Atmos track. - The already demo worthy DTS-HD Master Audio track is upgraded to an even more enveloping and dynamic listening experience. The added activity in the overhead channels is revealing and makes Watney's life in Mars open up even further. Dialogue reproduction remains crisp and clear. LFE performance is massive during a sand storm in the opening sequence. Music fidelity was excellent whether it was classic disco tracks, David Bowie's 'Starman', or the thrilling score by Harry Gregson-Williams. 10/10
