Gravity Blu-ray Review

**SYNOPSIS**

Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the darkness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

**MOVIE REVIEW**

Director Alfonso Cuarón dedicated several years of his life to bring his film Gravity to the screen and he has created an instant science fiction classic. It wowed audiences with it's visual splendor that sets a new benchmark but by the end is really about a woman that is dead inside after the death of her young daughter rising like a phoenix reborn into the world grateful to be alive and to move on. Sandra Bullock is stunning as Dr. Ryan Stone and deserves all the accolades that she has gotten for this , her finest performance. George Clooney cuts a cocksure image as the wise veteran of several space missions and stays strong to help Dr. Stone when all hell breaks loose and they are spinning away into the depths of outer space. The film runs a perfectly paced 91 minutes with zero filler. Every movement and moment matters until the gripping final minutes that had me on the edge of my seat. Gravity is one of the finest films to come out of 2013 and is a masterpiece of visual storytelling blended with two film stars at the top of their game giving it their all. 10/10

**VIDEO QUALITY**

Gravity arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 2.40:1. - From the first image of Earth from space to the last moments on a beautiful lake setting with lush green mountains this is a demo worthy transfer. Fine detail is really breathtaking in the clarity of every element on screen from the space tech and inside of the international space station to the stitching and craftsmanship in the space suits as well. Colors run the gamut from crisp whites of the shuttle, gorgeous blues and sand tones on Earth below and the brilliant orange glow and burn of fire. Flesh tones look quite natural. Black levels are key for a film in outer space and they are deep and inky throughout. Contrast is well balanced. I noticed no signs of compression artifacts or edge enhancement.10/10

**AUDIO QUALITY**

Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - What a stunner. This is without a doubt one of the most immersive tracks I've ever had the pleasure of listening to in my theater room. Surrounds are at work at all times creating a marvel of a 360 degree sound field. Silky smooth pans are used to create the effect of being lost in space with a miniscule tether the only thing keeping you from entering the deep abyss of space to certain death. Effects exhibit crystal clear clarity. Dialogue was crisp and clean while coming from several different directions depending on the action on screen. LFE performance was excellent with deep, rich bass that was tight and precise. The beautiful score by Steven Price is well represented with several key moments being the only sound element. This is a dynamic track that will take your breath away. There were no pops, cracks or hisses. 10/10

**VIDEO QUALITY**

Baggage Claim arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1 - Quite a beautiful romantic comedy presentation. Colors were highlighted by bold primaries and perfectly balanced saturation. Skin tones were wholly natural throughout. The image is razor sharp, striking close ups show every pore on the actor's faces. Black levels are deep and rich. I noticed no signs of edge enhancement, banding or compression artifacts. 9/10

**AUDIO QUALITY**

Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - The track is front heavy with dialogue dead center that was crisp and clear throughout the film's 96 minute run time. There is some dynamic range shown for the score and source cues. Bass adds a little heft to the music but nothing else. Surrounds were barely heard save for a few light effects. No anomalies to report on this track. 7.5/10
