Highway To Heaven: Season One - DVD Review

***SYNOPSIS***

Jonathan Smith isn't your average helpful handyman. He's an angel with a mission from God, or "the Boss" as he likes to call him. Accompanied by ex-cop Mark Gordon, whose troubled life Jonathan once helped turn around, he travels the world, guiding the lost and suffering back toward the HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN.

Whether helping a young boxer pressured to throw a fight or a veteran's Eurasian daughter feel welcome in America, Jonathan finds a way to bring a little grace and love into the lives of those he touches. And when necessary, he helps things along with a little angel power.

Starring Michael Landon and Victor French, all 24 uplifting episodes from the first season of this family favorite are now available on DVD for the first time.

BONUS FEATURES:
Feature-Length Documentary Michael Landon: Memories with Laughter and Love
Rare Outtakes
Text Biographies of Michael Landon and Victor French

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Highway To Heaven arrives on DVD with a 480i transfer in the original aspect ratio 1.33:1. I wasn't expecting newly minted transfers here but this is an unfortunately soft and washed out image. Colors were mostly muted. I also detected some dirt and scratches that is due to the source elements. 5/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. This is a flat track with not one audible pan or discrete effect. Dialogue was crisp and clear throughout though. This is an adequate listen for the type of show that is being viewed. 5/10

Gangland: The Final Season - Blu-ray Disc Review

***SYNOPSIS***

They rob, kill, and terrorize, and they ve left their violent mark on our nation s history. Delve deep into the rich and often brutal bloodlines of gangs across America, from Ohio to Arizona, New Jersey to South Dakota, as GANGLAND returns in its seventh and final season to paint a violently accurate and compelling portrait of gang life. Exclusive interviews, rarely seen footage, and unique access to the lives of gangsters provide a solid insight into why gangs exist, how they operate, their increasingly destructive methods, and the alarming rate at which they re spreading to suburban and rural areas. Included this season is a provocative 75th episode that revisits the most notorious characters in the history of the series, hosted by rappers Ice-T and Snoop Dog.

GANGLAND: THE FINAL SEASON contains the following 15 episodes -

Mile High Killers/ Public Enemy Number One/ Most Notorious/ Vendetta of Blood/ A Killer's Revenge/ Wild Boyz/ Better off Dead/ Capitol Killers/ Clash of the Crips/ Army of Hate/ The Filthy Few/ Shoot to Kill/ Road Warriors/ Valley of Death/ Death Before Dishonor

***MOVIE REVIEW***

This captivating documentary series comes to a close with a strong final season that focuses for the most part on the Latino and Hispanic gangs that are the majority in several cities. We are treated to some startling details in regards to gang life and gang warfare. There are some well chosen special such as Ice-T and the legendary Snoop Dogg. There are some episodes that fall a little flat but as a whole this is a fitting cap to the series. I hope in the future they will bring the concept back and explore it further, possibly in different countries even. 8/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Gangland arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080i transfer in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. Due to using various sources of video footage this isn't the most eye pleasing reality series but it is a nice, more consistent upgrade over the broadcast presentation. There is a hefty amount of stock footage which looks soft and grainy but never was it unwatchable. Newly filmed interview segments and on location scenes were very vibrant with good color saturation. Fine detail was above average in these instances as well. Overall a transfer that while good is sometimes hindered by its source. 7/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. Like previous seasons of the show this is a straightforward track that has crisp dialogue reproduction and some pretty good dynamics coming from gun blasts and other sound effects. Bass was solid when the score comes into play. 7/10

Our Planet:: The Past, Present and Future of Earth - DVD Review

***SYNOPSIS***

Journey through the past, present and future of Earth as HISTORY explores the very real beginnings of our planet, the potentially catastrophic results of our own behavior on it, and the possibility of a world wiped clean of humanity in this stunning collection of HISTORY s most Earth-centric and informative series. Contents include:

HOW THE EARTH WAS MADE:
HISTORY goes back in time, from 4.5 billion years ago to today, to reveal the mystery of geology across the world. Spectacular on-location shooting, evidence from geologists in the field and clear, and dramatic graphics combine to show how the immensely powerful, and at times violent, forces of geology have literally shaped the world we live in.

A GLOBAL WARNING?:
Arctic ice is melting, sea levels are rising, glaciers are shrinking at alarming rates, and the Earth is getting unmistakably warmer. Is this vast, potentially catastrophic, climate change the result of human behavior? HISTORY offers an in-depth study of the science behind this controversial, hot-button issue.

LIFE AFTER PEOPLE:
What would happen if every human being on Earth disappeared? This isn t the story of how we might vanish it is the story of what happens to the world we leave behind. Each episode examines how the very landscape of planet Earth would change in our absence, using cinematic CGI to reveal in scientific detail the fate of every aspect of the man-made world.

BONUS FEATURES: Additional Scenes. Bonus Documentary: Inside the Volcano

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Our Planet arrives on DVD with a 480i transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. DVD viewers are granted a pleasing transfer despite the various sources. We can attribute the clear and colorful presentation due to the fact that the shows originally aired in high definition. Black levels were consistently strong. Colors were best during the segments from How The Earth Was Made. There were instances of softness when stock footage was used but as a whole I felt detail was quite good. 7/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. While the soundfield is a bit narrow, this is still a solid presentation. Dialogue and narration were crisp and clear. There were some decent panning and environmental effects when called upon. Bass was surprisingly tight and robust. 7.5/10

***MOVIE REVIEW***

The True Story of WrestleMania has been one of the most anticipated releases for the first quarter of the new year. While I enjoyed the Main Feature on Disc 1 (Running Time 2hrs1min12sec) after all is said and done we still don;t have a definitive look at WrestleMania. Things start off really good discussing the territories and a young, aggressive Vince McMahon wanting to expand his fathers company into the mainstream of America. I & II are discussed in great detail and even has insight from the Warner Theater owner that was one of the participating theaters to show via closed captioning the early WrestleManias. They really put over Hulk Hogan and it was nice to see them show their appreciation and realize that from the very first stages that the biggest event of the year would not have lasted without Hulk or vice versa. The documentary runs in linear fashion from I-III but then flips to XXIII to discuss Donald Trumps involvement in the Hair vs. Hair Match then goes back into IV and V hailing from Trump at Atlantic City. From that point on things run non linear which hurts the presentation overall.

What is one of the most glaring flaws is the complete glossing over several years of shows with nary a discussion of the matches that I'm sure fans would have appreciated more insight and feelings. Make no mistake this is the WWE version of history as they still insist that III held 93,173 patrons and VII was moved to a smaller venue due to security concerns during the Iraq war, when it was really because of poor ticket sales and waning interest. They are quite frank though with the fact that the preview matches at house shows between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair just weren't catching on with fans after years of build up and that was the main reason for making two main events at VIII, with "Macho Man" Randy Savage taking Hogans spot against Flair.

The absolute highlight is an all too brief fly on the wall look at WrestleMania IX including a dancing Vince at the Gorilla position when Shawn Michaels heads out for his match. It is a candid peek behind the curtain for what is regarded among the worst WrestleManias ever. There are quick little clips of behind the scenes footage from other years but usually there is no audio as there is narration or an interviewee speaking. There are interview segments from Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, HHH, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Sheamus, The Big Show, Ricky "The Dragon: Steamboat, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Gene Okerlund, Stu Staks - Pro Wreslting Illustrated Publisher, Jerry "The King" Lawlwer, The Rock, William "Refrigerator" Perry, Dick Ebersol, Howard Finkel, Jerry Brisco, Donald Trump, Sgt. Slaughter, and "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase. I would say this is a definite recommend to fans still but just go in not expecting an extremely open look that we were hoping for. 7.5/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

The True Story of WrestleMania arrives on DVD with a 480I transfer utilizing in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The main feature includes newly shot interview segments that are interspersed with a ton of vintage footage that has been stretched to fill the screen. Despite not using original aspect for the 80's and 90's footage the quality is still very good. The new and recent scenes are abound with crisp, bold colors and strong black levels. Detail was good on clothing textures and close up shots of the rings or crowd. Vintage footage was a little soft in some spots but was always pleasing with nice color saturation coming from some of the more colorful individuals and style choices of those days.

Disc 2 & 3 contain the matches and are presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 with the matches presented with a starry background on both sides of the image to fill out the screen on HDTVs without sacrificing the original footage and stretching it. Colors were were consistently good with deep reds and sky blues being the best. Overall the presentation continues WWE's solid run of work. 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track on Disc 1, while Disc 2 & 3 hare presented with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo tracks. These are crisp and clean tracks with solid dialogue reproduction. Music cues and crowd din lightly bleed to the surrounds on Disc 1. Disc 2 & 3 had decent stereo separation and the match commentary was crisp and clean. 7.5/10
