Ice Road Truckers Season Five - DVD Review

***SYNOPSIS***

HISTORY continues its huge success story with SEASON FIVE of ICE ROAD TRUCKERS. For two months every year, truckers on the world’s most dangerous tundra make history by hauling vital equipment to remote outposts hundreds of miles north of civilization – over roads briefly built by frozen bodies of water. Hugh, Alex, Lisa and Jack race against time, the elements and each other to transport thousands of loads before the road literally disappears into the sea. This groundbreaking series continues to examine a time-honored profession that dates back almost a century, often through generations of families.

DISC ONE Pushing the Edge / Ice Road Rage / Wrong Turn & Burned / Fire on Ice

DISC TWO Under the Hammer / The Braking Point / A Banged-Up Job / Meltdown

DISC THREE Road to Nowhere / Rookie Rebellion / Hittin’ The Skids / No More Mr. Nice Guy

DISC FOUR Ice Rogue Trucker / The Heat Is On / Judgement Day / The Last Dash / Bonus

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Ice Road Truckers arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. A solid presentation that exhibits natural fleshtones and colors. Detail of the rigs and the dangerous and icy roads was very good. Contrast was consistently balanced with strong black levels. A nice standard def presentation 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Audio 2.0 track. Dialogue was crisp and clean and is the main component of this presentation. Sound effects are minimal but add a sense of the danger on the road when needed. Overall a good listen. 7/10

Detail was sharp with clothing textures and the bright outdoor scenes coming across the best. There was some minor noise in the image from time to time but nothing to distract from an overall pleasing image. 8.5/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0 track. A front heavy track with little in the way of stereo separation which is a disappointment due to the nature of the show. Would have been great to have an LFE channel for the big gun blasts but the presentation overall was crisp and clear just not a stunner. 7/10

Robotech: The Complete Original Series - DVD Review

***SYNOPSIS***

"ROBOTECH is a sweeping science-fiction anime epic of humans defending their home world against alien domination. The saga is told through the eyes of characters caught up in a series of wars that erupts when a mysterious spacecraft crash-lands on Earth at the turn of the millennium. The secrets of alien knowledge aboard this vessel were unlocked, leading to the development of “Robotechnology” and the creation of a vast arsenal of robotic “mecha” to defend the Earth against the alien threats that would eventually strike to lay claim to the mysterious power source known as “protoculture.”

Carl Macek’s groundbreaking sci fi epic has enthralled audiences since it first appeared on American television in 1985. One of the first-ever anime imports, this saga spans three generations of mankind’s fight for freedom.

ROBOTECH: THE COMPLETE SERIES contains the remastered versions of all 85 episodes from the three Robotech Wars: THE MACROSS SAGA, THE ROBOTECH MASTERS and THE NEW GENERATION"

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Robotech arrives on DVD with a 480i transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. A very clean image overall with strong color reproduction. Black levels were solid with the darkness of space coming through fine. The only thing to mar the presentation is jagged edges and shimmering from time to time but I found the overall remastering work to be quite good. 7.5/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Stereo 5.1 track. The expansion to 5 channels results in battle scenes that are a fun time with sounds panning all across the listening room. Dialogue was very crisp. The mix is front heavy until the action ramps up and gets thrilling. 8/10

***SPECIAL FEATURES***

American Pickers: Volume Two - DVD Review

***SYNOPSIS***

In small towns, and along America’s back roads, treasures are waiting to be uncovered— valuable relics from our history that are hidden in junk piles, buried in barns and stacked in garages. It takes experts to find them – and turn rust to riches. AMERICAN PICKERS follows two of the most skilled “pickers”— Mike Wolfe, owner of Antique Archaeology, and his business partner, Frank Fritz— as they hunt down objects with historical, collectible and pop culture value that have been long forgotten by their owners. Along the way, they meet people whose own stories open a window into American lives and history. In this collection, Mike and Frank try to strike a deal with NASCAR Champion Ryan Newman, explore the appropriately named Pickens, South Carolina and try to buy a 300-pound boot.

AMERICAN PICKERS VOLUME 2 includes eight fan-favorite episodes on two discs.

DISC ONE - Art of the Deal / Buddy’s Booby Trap / Gordon’s Gold Mine / Smooth Operators

DISC TWO - Getting the Boot / Easy Riders / Psychic Pickings / One Pony Town

***MOVIE REVIEW***

I have been a fan of the since its debut and this is another strong collection of episodes. Mike and Frank are a bit loud bit their enthusiasm is great. The best aspect of the show is meeting all the strange and enchanting characters they meet on their journey. Sometimes the people are the real treasure here. I have a minor problem with the show is that the pickers sometimes say they want the item for themselves and they turn around and sell it for 5x profit or more. As a viewer you really get the sense of being in the places they pick from and you can almost smell the old musty storage sheds that haven't been opened for 20 years. An overall enjoyable show to watch. 8.5/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

American Pickers arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. I was pleased overall with the image on display here. Colors consist mostly of earth tones and browns due to the old dusty locations the pickers rummage through. Detail was quite good and helps in showing the items that Mike and Frankie are looking at. Black levels were consistent. There were some moments of noise but nothing to distract from the presentation. 7.5/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0 track. The on location dialogue is crisp and clean. The theme music is upbeat with a country twang. Bass was nonexistent. The audio presentation was fine. 7/10

Lee & Grant - DVD Review

***SYNOPSIS***

Produced with the cooperation of leading Civil War historian Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump, LEE & GRANT is a personal look at two iconic leaders of the Civil War. Surprising details reveal the bold choices and almost godlike power Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee summoned on decisive battlefields like Vicksburg and Gettysburg that, within days of each other, turned the tide of the war. Originally aired in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, this special features a unique perspective, exploring how these men changed the course of American history.

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Lee & Grant arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. This being a new production the image is very pleasing overall. Colors are somewhat muted do to the tone the production chose. Fine detail on uniforms and weaponry was good with fabric textures coming through great. Black levels were consistently good. 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0 track. We are treated to a strong track that would have been allowed to breath with a 5.1 mix. Dialogue and narration was crisp and clean. Sound effects were good with some nice stereo separation. 8/10

***MOVIE REVIEW***

If the first set in the WWE: Greatest Rivalries is any indication then we wrestling fans are in for a treat for years to come. The first correct choice they made was using Jim Ross as the interviewer, he has a real history with these two Superstars and has a true passion for their story. This is a whole other level than the creepy and constant camera shots of Matt Striker grinning and acting cheesy with the Rey Mysterio compilation. Good Ol' JR is quick to the point and asks smart follow questions while always being respectful of these two legends.

The main feature runs 2hrs5mins total and there was hardly a dull moment. We start off with Shawn and Bret talking about their mutual respect for each other and how they felt their respective tag teams were the new blood that could steal the show instead of the lumbering giants that had dominated the 80's. From there it moves onto there single careers and how they were on a collision course to the top. They both speak openly about how they were close friends and Shawn would hang out with Bret and his family. It was nice to see them reminiscing and smiling about it. About halfway through the run time we get into the more juicy stuff I know me and a lot of fans have been waiting for. The odd thing is that it was for the longest time them both adding fire to the flame for business to improve and backstage were on the same page. Then in late 96 is when things went down hill and Bret felt hurt that Shawn explicitly told him to his face that he would not drop the WWE Championship back to him, despite that being to Harts knowledge their original plan, and if things had been different that they would have worked matches together for another 10 years and this story would never had lead to the screw job.

1997 rolls around and Shawn claims injury so the WrestleMania XIII opponent for Bret became the on fire "Stone Cold" Steve Austin , HBK actually jokes that "well you guys just stole the show, good consolation prize". HBK states that the he always felt he didn't get the pat on the back from Bret that he was always looking for and Bret said that he thought it was implied that it was coming and he does regret not doing it earlier. They comment on their brutally personal jabs at each other on RAW during 97 and the "Sunny Days" remark. All of this leads up to about 30 minutes worth of detail on Survivor Series 97. We have heard so many sides of the story over the years that it is such a relief to see Bret so open about it, despite Shawn being a little more guarded. They are both emotional during this part of the interview and I'm sure many fans will find it cathartic if they were a huge fan of either man to this day. The aftermath is discussed and Bret hated going to WCW but he was gutted by how he was treated. He talks about his stroke and how he had his phone in the hospital not hooked up for more than 10 minutes and Vince called with a pep talk and they talked about future plans for him to return and produce a DVD of his career, that call lead to 7 years of events that brought us to Dayton, Ohio live on Monday Night RAW where the reunion of Shawn and Bret happened and they embraced in mutual respect and regrets.

The main themes of this face to face is respect and regrets. My personal all time favorite is Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart was always in my top 5. Bret moved up a couple notches with this set due to his being so honest and open about every subject and just telling how it all went down with a storyteller ease. It's great to see him so proud again and moving on with his life as well as rebuilding the friendship with Shawn. Shawn Michaels was very good on here as well but he didn't seem his usual charismatic self and he came across defensive on certain subjects. I feel it was more due to him still feeling deep regret for the events that transpired and being a born again Christian he wants to move on with the great man he has become since that infamous day in Montreal. Every wrestling fan owes it to themselves and these two legends to purchase this set on release day. 10/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

WWE: Greatest Rivalries arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. We'll start with Disc 1 where the majority of the footage is a newly HD shot interview at WWE Studios and it exhibits natural skintones, warm colors, and deep blacks. Fine detail was strong with visible stitching on HBK's baseball cap and individual strands of The Hitman's hair. The video highlight segments that lead into the next subject feature tons of vintage photographs and match clips. The colors were quite bold from that era and while the image at times showed a slight softness that was sue to the tech used at that time. There is a HBK logo and Hitman logo that flank the sides of the image during these segments as well as the matches on Disc 2 & 3.

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Stereo 5.1 track. The main feature on Disc 1 exhibited crisp and clean dialogue from the participants and the tastefully done music score that plays over video highlights sounded great with some decent bleed to the surrounds otherwise this is a front heavy affair. The matches on Disc 2 & 3 had clean play-by-play commentary and the them music for Shawn and Bret came across full bodied in the front two channels. There was hardly any surround effects to report. A solid listen all around. 8/10

More Brains! A Return To The Living Dead coming to DVD October 18th

CAV Distributing will be releasing a definitive 4-hour DVD of More Brains! A Return To The Living Dead on October 18, 2011. The main feature will be presented in 1.85:1 and a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track will provide the audio. Below is the official press synopsis and planned bonus features:

"It worked in the movie!" When an army drum is breached and a mysterious chemical gas is released into a nearby cemetery, the dead return to life with only one thing on their minds...brains! The zombie menace quickly descends upon a group of misfits who must fight for survival as they are picked off one at a time by a horde of the undead. "Do you ever wonder about all the different ways of dying?" Dan O'Bannon's outrageous splatter classic "The Return of the Living Dead" has continued to terrify and entertain horror fans for over twenty-five years with its delicious mix of blood, guts, sex and punk. Boasting off-beat humor, plenty of attitude and one of the most famous zombies ever committed to celluloid, it's easy to see why the film's legacy continues to grow. "It makes the pain go away..." MORE BRAINS! A RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD is the ultimate account of the tongue-in-cheek, stylish and apocalyptic zombie movie. It features -- for the first time ever! -- contributions from all the main cast as well as clips, photographs, storyboards, conceptual art, publicity materials, archival documents and behind-the-scenes footage. "They're back from the grave and ready to party!" Through this definitive retrospective fans are finally able to explore the film's journey from the world of "Night of the Living Dead" to the mind of acclaimed writer/director Dan O'Bannon. Narrator Brian Peck ("Scuz") guides you through the blood, sweat and tears as cast and crew look back on their experience in the graveyard creating the film that's been called "a beauty of a cult classic!"

SummerSlam 2011 arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The PPV was shot in HD and the standard definition downconversion displayed a pleasing image. Black levels were consistent with solid contrast. Colors benefit from good saturation and some bold primaries. Fine detail was also clearly seen in the t-shirt designs and different people in the crowd. There were of course a few minor compression artifacts during ring entrances but nothing obtrusive. A strong performer overall. 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The commentary (when there was any actual play-by-play) was crisp and clean throughout the show. Entrance music was a standout with good dynamics and some mid bass notes coming across tight and accurate. Surround channels are there for atmospheric crowd din and some light bleeding of sounds from the ring. 8/10

***MOVIE REVIEW***

The main feature on Disc 1 runs at 1hr and 30min. This was one of my most anticipated releases and I wasn't disappointed. It all starts at Elimination Chamber 2011 where we see Randy being candidly followed into the back stage area and locker room. From there the doc follows this path all the way to WrestleMania XXVII with some great insight and reflection of his career so far.

One of the highlights is seeing the great family man he has matured into when he has a home show in St. Louis. We are given a glimpse into their home life with his adorable little girl and his beautiful wife. Harley Race is seen near catering at the arena and is so sweet with Randy's daughter. John Cena jokes that he got his food all ready for him. Randy and his Wife speak openly about his drug addiction and how it almost claimed his life and it by the end of this feature you will be proud of the man he has become by focusing on his family and how he now channels his rage into his "Viper" character instead of lashing out at people who care about him.

HHH, John Cena, Batista, Edge, Cowboy Bob Orton, The Miz, and several more superstars are both praising but bluntly truthful , the best Cena calling the old Orton "a Dick and and an asshole". HHH speaks on them bringing him into Evolution and seeing a once in lifetime talent. He also reflects on Randys cockiness and addictions. It first of all was great there was no Matt Striker or Michael Cole anywhere to be seen, and to here people be so candid for once instead of just glowing praise was refreshing. I won't speak anymore on this well made documentary and let you see for yourself, you will not regret purchasing this set. 9/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Evolution Of A Predator arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The main feature is a superbly edited feature and there were no major signs of compression or edge enhancement.Interspersed between the main feature on Disc 1 are new interviews and they are pretty much perfect with deep blacks, rich color saturation, and superb facial details. The matches are presented in their original aspect ratios of 1.33:1 and more current ones in 1.78:1. There is a static image on the sides for the early matches to fill out the image on your HDTV. The content overall is crisp and clean with great color balance and strong black levels. This is a solid presentation that I'm sure will look even better on Blu-ray. 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. While this is a 5.1 track it is for the most part very front heavy. The front channels exhibit some decent stereo separation and there was some subtle crowd din in the rear channels. The commentary on the matches was crisp and clean. Narration on the main feature was perfect, as was the newly shot interview footage. 7/10

For years, the Money in the Bank match was a highlight of WrestleMania, with each of the six winners going on to successfully cash in their opportunities and win World Championships. So the stakes are incredibly high for the Superstars of Raw and SmackDown look to climb the ladder of success at Money in the Bank 2011. Now, you can own the DVD!

Randy Orton vs. Christian

WWE Championship

CM Punk vs. John Cena

***VIDEO QUALITY***

Money In The Bank 2011 arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. Black levels are good with solid contrast. Colors were great with nice saturation and no bleeding. Detail was solid but there was softness in the image the first 20 minutes due to Kanes' pyro making the ring and arena presented in a haze. There were some minor compression artifacts during ring entrances but nothing obtrusive. A solid performer, but it is a shame that the best PPV in quite some time doesn't get a Blu-ray release. 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Entrance music was the highlight with good dynamics and some solid bass performance. Commentary was crisp and clean throughout the show. Surround channels were used for atmospheric crowd din, which comes across well with the lively Chicago crowd. 7.5/10
