WORLD EXCLUSIVE WWE: You Think You Know Me? The Story of Edge - DVD Review

***MOVIE REVIEW***

WWE keeps their record of superb career biographies with this set. Adam Copeland (Edge) is such charismatic and down to earth talker. Yes he talks about going to Wrestlemania VI in Toronto and seeing his idol Hulk Hogan. We learn the history of how his friendship with Jay Reso (Christian) formed over Christian being the new kid with a throwing ninja star. We see some great home video footage of his learning and traveling the road under the tutelage of Sweet Daddy Siki due to his winning essay. The Brood is discussed and how once he spoke that was it, they new they had a star.

Then we move into the TLC era of classic matches between Edge & Christian, The Dudley Boys, and The Hardy Boyz. From there we move to when Edge & Christian were the coolest and funniest team on Raw or Smackdown. This section reeks of awesomeness. Then the splitting of the team occurs and we movie into his single careers and candid remarks on how some didn't think he was ready, including comments from Edge himself. Of course tragedy struck when his neck problems arose and he had to be out for close to a year. This only motivated him more and when he returned and was booed in hos hometown that is when he flipped the switch and became one of the best heels of the last decade.

My favorite part of this 110 minute biography is when we here a lot of the backstage details of the budding romance between Edge and Lita. I was shocked when we are treated to newly shot comments from Matt Hardy on the situation that happened in the summer of 05 and became the hottest program for about a month. His Money in the Bank cash in is discussed in great detail and John Cena states that him and Vince McMahon were the only ones fully confident in the decision of putting the belt on Edge. Of course he lost it back to Cena 3 weeks later and Edge says he was pissed because the fans were really taking to him as a new champion bit WWE decided to stick to the plan which he jokingly remarks they hardly ever do.

His strong programs with Cena, Batista and Undertaker are discussed in good detail and then some fun insight on his work with Vickie Guererro. One of the unexpected moments is how he calls Zakk Ryder and Curt Hawkins his "kids" and they call him "Uncle Adam". You all know what happens after WrestleMania last year but it was great to hear hos reflections on it now. In between his career retrospective we see Adam Copeland the man just enjoying his life now in the mountains. He tries to get out in nature 2-3 times a week with his dogs, goes kayaking and hiking. He looks to be at peace and loving his new lifestyle since his forced retirement. This is just a wholly entertaining watch and includes newly shot interview footage from Edges' Mother, Lita, Matt Hardy, his close friends, Christian, Sweet Daddy Siki, CM Punk, Chris Jericho, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Vickie Geurerro, John Cena, Curt Hawkins, Zakk Ryder, Michael Hayes, Batista, Randy Orton, Mick Foley, and Trish Stratus. Well worth adding to your wrestling library. 10/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

The Story of Edge arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1. Another high quality down convert from the HD source. There were no major signs of compression at all. Colors saturation was good with the bright coats and outfits Edge&Christian would wear as a tag team. Fine detail was great with close ups in newly shot interview footage all the little details of the participants faces.

Black levels were consistently well balanced. Any footage shot before 2008 is standard def in the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 with an Edge pendant design in the sidebars to fill the image on 16x9 HDTV sets. This was an enjoyable and strong presentation overall. 8.5/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Dialogue was crisp and clean as was any commentary heard on the matches of Disc 2&3. Crowd din bleeds subtly to the surrounds from time to time. Edges awesome entrance music came through great and had some added heft from the woofers. A fine listen. 8/10

***MOVIE REVIEW***

If the first set in the WWE: Greatest Rivalries is any indication then we wrestling fans are in for a treat for years to come. The first correct choice they made was using Jim Ross as the interviewer, he has a real history with these two Superstars and has a true passion for their story. This is a whole other level than the creepy and constant camera shots of Matt Striker grinning and acting cheesy with the Rey Mysterio compilation. Good Ol' JR is quick to the point and asks smart follow questions while always being respectful of these two legends.

The main feature runs 2hrs5mins total and there was hardly a dull moment. We start off with Shawn and Bret talking about their mutual respect for each other and how they felt their respective tag teams were the new blood that could steal the show instead of the lumbering giants that had dominated the 80's. From there it moves onto there single careers and how they were on a collision course to the top. They both speak openly about how they were close friends and Shawn would hang out with Bret and his family. It was nice to see them reminiscing and smiling about it. About halfway through the run time we get into the more juicy stuff I know me and a lot of fans have been waiting for. The odd thing is that it was for the longest time them both adding fire to the flame for business to improve and backstage were on the same page. Then in late 96 is when things went down hill and Bret felt hurt that Shawn explicitly told him to his face that he would not drop the WWE Championship back to him, despite that being to Harts knowledge their original plan, and if things had been different that they would have worked matches together for another 10 years and this story would never had lead to the screw job.

1997 rolls around and Shawn claims injury so the WrestleMania XIII opponent for Bret became the on fire "Stone Cold" Steve Austin , HBK actually jokes that "well you guys just stole the show, good consolation prize". HBK states that the he always felt he didn't get the pat on the back from Bret that he was always looking for and Bret said that he thought it was implied that it was coming and he does regret not doing it earlier. They comment on their brutally personal jabs at each other on RAW during 97 and the "Sunny Days" remark. All of this leads up to about 30 minutes worth of detail on Survivor Series 97. We have heard so many sides of the story over the years that it is such a relief to see Bret so open about it, despite Shawn being a little more guarded. They are both emotional during this part of the interview and I'm sure many fans will find it cathartic if they were a huge fan of either man to this day. The aftermath is discussed and Bret hated going to WCW but he was gutted by how he was treated. He talks about his stroke and how he had his phone in the hospital not hooked up for more than 10 minutes and Vince called with a pep talk and they talked about future plans for him to return and produce a DVD of his career, that call lead to 7 years of events that brought us to Dayton, Ohio live on Monday Night RAW where the reunion of Shawn and Bret happened and they embraced in mutual respect and regrets.

The main themes of this face to face is respect and regrets. My personal all time favorite is Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart was always in my top 5. Bret moved up a couple notches with this set due to his being so honest and open about every subject and just telling how it all went down with a storyteller ease. It's great to see him so proud again and moving on with his life as well as rebuilding the friendship with Shawn. Shawn Michaels was very good on here as well but he didn't seem his usual charismatic self and he came across defensive on certain subjects. I feel it was more due to him still feeling deep regret for the events that transpired and being a born again Christian he wants to move on with the great man he has become since that infamous day in Montreal. Every wrestling fan owes it to themselves and these two legends to purchase this set on release day. 10/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***

WWE: Greatest Rivalries arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. We'll start with Disc 1 where the majority of the footage is a newly HD shot interview at WWE Studios and it exhibits natural skintones, warm colors, and deep blacks. Fine detail was strong with visible stitching on HBK's baseball cap and individual strands of The Hitman's hair. The video highlight segments that lead into the next subject feature tons of vintage photographs and match clips. The colors were quite bold from that era and while the image at times showed a slight softness that was sue to the tech used at that time. There is a HBK logo and Hitman logo that flank the sides of the image during these segments as well as the matches on Disc 2 & 3.

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital Stereo 5.1 track. The main feature on Disc 1 exhibited crisp and clean dialogue from the participants and the tastefully done music score that plays over video highlights sounded great with some decent bleed to the surrounds otherwise this is a front heavy affair. The matches on Disc 2 & 3 had clean play-by-play commentary and the them music for Shawn and Bret came across full bodied in the front two channels. There was hardly any surround effects to report. A solid listen all around. 8/10

Money In The Bank 2011 arrives on DVD with a 480p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. Black levels are good with solid contrast. Colors were great with nice saturation and no bleeding. Detail was solid but there was softness in the image the first 20 minutes due to Kanes' pyro making the ring and arena presented in a haze. There were some minor compression artifacts during ring entrances but nothing obtrusive. A solid performer, but it is a shame that the best PPV in quite some time doesn't get a Blu-ray release. 8/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***

Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Entrance music was the highlight with good dynamics and some solid bass performance. Commentary was crisp and clean throughout the show. Surround channels were used for atmospheric crowd din, which comes across well with the lively Chicago crowd. 7.5/10

***MOVIE REVIEW***

The True Story of WrestleMania has been one of the most anticipated releases for the first quarter of the new year. While I enjoyed the Main Feature on Disc 1 (Running Time 2hrs1min12sec) after all is said and done we still don;t have a definitive look at WrestleMania. Things start off really good discussing the territories and a young, aggressive Vince McMahon wanting to expand his fathers company into the mainstream of America. I & II are discussed in great detail and even has insight from the Warner Theater owner that was one of the participating theaters to show via closed captioning the early WrestleManias. They really put over Hulk Hogan and it was nice to see them show their appreciation and realize that from the very first stages that the biggest event of the year would not have lasted without Hulk or vice versa. The documentary runs in linear fashion from I-III but then flips to XXIII to discuss Donald Trumps involvement in the Hair vs. Hair Match then goes back into IV and V hailing from Trump at Atlantic City. From that point on things run non linear which hurts the presentation overall.

What is one of the most glaring flaws is the complete glossing over several years of shows with nary a discussion of the matches that I'm sure fans would have appreciated more insight and feelings. Make no mistake this is the WWE version of history as they still insist that III held 93,173 patrons and VII was moved to a smaller venue due to security concerns during the Iraq war, when it was really because of poor ticket sales and waning interest. They are quite frank though with the fact that the preview matches at house shows between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair just weren't catching on with fans after years of build up and that was the main reason for making two main events at VIII, with "Macho Man" Randy Savage taking Hogans spot against Flair.

The absolute highlight is an all too brief fly on the wall look at WrestleMania IX including a dancing Vince at the Gorilla position when Shawn Michaels heads out for his match. It is a candid peek behind the curtain for what is regarded among the worst WrestleManias ever. There are quick little clips of behind the scenes footage from other years but usually there is no audio as there is narration or an interviewee speaking. There are interview segments from Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, HHH, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Sheamus, The Big Show, Ricky "The Dragon: Steamboat, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Gene Okerlund, Stu Staks - Pro Wreslting Illustrated Publisher, Jerry "The King" Lawlwer, The Rock, William "Refrigerator" Perry, Dick Ebersol, Howard Finkel, Jerry Brisco, Donald Trump, Sgt. Slaughter, and "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase. I would say this is a definite recommend to fans still but just go in not expecting an extremely open look that we were hoping for. 7.5/10





***VIDEO QUALITY***
The True Story of WrestleMania arrives on DVD with a 480I transfer utilizing in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The main feature includes newly shot interview segments that are interspersed with a ton of vintage footage that has been stretched to fill the screen. Despite not using original aspect for the 80's and 90's footage the quality is still very good. The new and recent scenes are abound with crisp, bold colors and strong black levels. Detail was good on clothing textures and close up shots of the rings or crowd. Vintage footage was a little soft in some spots but was always pleasing with nice color saturation coming from some of the more colorful individuals and style choices of those days.

Disc 2 & 3 contain the matches and are presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 with the matches presented with a starry background on both sides of the image to fill out the screen on HDTVs without sacrificing the original footage and stretching it. Colors were were consistently good with deep reds and sky blues being the best. Overall the presentation continues WWE's solid run of work. 8/10




***AUDIO QUALITY***
Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 5.1 track on Disc 1, while Disc 2 & 3 hare presented with Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo tracks. These are crisp and clean tracks with solid dialogue reproduction. Music cues and crowd din lightly bleed to the surrounds on Disc 1. Disc 2 & 3 had decent stereo separation and the match commentary was crisp and clean. 7.5/10

***SYNOPSIS***

Big Show lays claim to the title of World s Largest Athlete and anyone who doubts it may be on the receiving end of his devastating knockout punch. The 7-foot giant has been a staple of the Sports Entertainment scene since his WCW debut in the 90s, and has battled some of the all-time greats, including Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sting, Undertaker, Triple H, John Cena, and more. He's also cast his enormous shadow in the worlds of television and movies with roles on Royal Pains, Saturday Night Live, The Waterboy, MacGruber, and Knucklehead.
Now for the first time ever, Big Show s mammoth career will be highlighted in a DVD set. This 3-disc release will include a never-before-seen documentary on the life and times of Big Show featuring new candid interviews where Show discusses how a giant lives in an average-sized world, his sports entertainment career and more.

***MOVIE REVIEW***

I'll start by saying that I personally have always respected and enjoyed The Big Show but was surprised they were going to release a 3-Disc DVD on his career. Well those feelings of surprise were easily erased when I put in Disc 1 and started the main feature that runs at (59min59sec) I was enjoying what was the most refreshingly candid and fast paced documentary that WWE has provided in quite some time. We start as usual from the beginning but this is no usual childhood story. When Paul Wight (The Big Show) was 9 years old he developed a tumor on his Pituitary gland that caused growth hormone to secrete. He was 6' 4" when he hit 12 years old. The first 20 minutes or so are focused on his upbringing that included his hard working but caring Father, Aunts & Uncles, and Cousins. They are all interviewed here except sadly his Father whom passed away when Paul was in college playing Basketball, the pain from the loss and the surgery that removed the tumor but in turn caused his weight to gain more rapidly played into his decision to quit Basketball and school.


He was playing a charity Basketball game for Danny Bonaduce when he was noticed by Hulk Hogan who of course saw dollar signs, the rest as they say is history. The rest of his career is looked at with some great insight from The Big Show himself as well as new interviews from HHH, Edge, Pat Patterson, John Cena, William Regal, and Chavo Guerrero, even Henry Winkler for a brief moment We are for once thankfully spared from having to hear from Matt Striker in any interview segments. HHH has some very funny stories about The Big Show that he shares with us. One of the best parts of the documentary is to see in detail how the man has to travel to keep healthy and keep this going for a few more years. He has a personal driver that picks him up at the airport in his tour bus and then they are driven to the shows fro rest of the week and then flies back home.


The extras on the first disc are well worth taking your time to watch , we even learn how Vince McMahon came up with name "The Big Show". The matches that are included are fun to watch. I especially enjoyed his match from the 2002 Royal Rumble versus Brock Lesnar in MSG. It was a quick paced match and it was great to see what a powerhouse Lesnar was. We also get the official weigh in from RAW and the match at WrestleMania XXVI between Show and Floyd "Money" Mayweather , it was a great spectacle. Overall this is a fun and informative set that should be in every fans collection. 9/10

***VIDEO QUALITY***
A Giant's World arrives on DVD with a 480i transfer in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The documentary and recently shot interviews segments are very crisp. Colors are well saturated and I didn't notice any signs of bleeding. Black levels were solid throughout. The many never before seen still photos from his childhood show good detail. There are matches and segments from the WCW era , WWE Attitude era, that were shot in standard definition due to the technology at the time. These segments are presented in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratio with a split Big Show logo on the sides where black bars would usually be to fill your HDTV. The older footage is still very good with some spots of softness in 1995-96 WCW stuff. Overall this is a great presentation. 8/10

Audio is provided by both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo tracks. The main documentary is in 5.1 but it is a front heavy presentation with decent stereo separation from music cues. Surround usage was nil. The extras on Disc 1 and all of Disc 2 and Disc 3 are 2 channel presentations. For all 3 discs the dialogue and commentary was crisp and clean. A strong if underwhelming presentation. 7/10
