Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes the winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer's block. He settles in along with his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and his son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is plagued by psychic premonitions. As Jack's writing goes nowhere and Danny's visions become more disturbing, Jack discovers the hotel's dark secrets and begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac hell-bent on terrorizing his family.
The Shining arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray with a 2160p presentation in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. - When you watch a movie as many times as I have The Shining you think you've seen it all but with this new 4K transfer I was stunned by how many little details I never noticed in any other home video release. Fleshtones have a more natural appearance, colors have vivid saturation, like the blood pouring out of the infamous elevator. HDR makes the Overlook Hotel look better than ever with extra pop on natural and artificial lights, particularly the scenes that take place in front of the massive common room with the huge windows. Yes, for all us purists the tennis ball is back to it's correct yellow color and there is a new textural beauty to the carpeting it rolls onto to. Grain is thankfully still there and gives a filmic appearance. I could go on and on how much of a pleasure it was to watch my favorite horror movie of all time with this new 4K presentation.
Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - This track has a few improvements over the PCM track that was on the 2007 Blu-ray release. The bass is clearly more pronounced which makes it a more dynamic listen.
