By day Gerri Dandridge is a sexy professor, but by night she transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves ensnared in Gerri’s chilling web of lust and terror. Charley and “Evil” Ed must stop Gerri from drinking and bathing in the blood of a “new moon virgin,” which just so happens to be Charley’s ex-girlfriend, Amy. They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called "Fright Night," to drive a stake through Gerri’s plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.
Before reviewing the film you need to know this is a sequel to the direct to video remake that was released in 2011 that starred Colin Farrel and not the original 1980's cult fave. While not a great new entry into the vampire horror genre this is an adequate Friday night rental to watch during this spooky month. For gore hounds there is a good amount of blood though not much in the way of genuine scares. The cinematography was surprisingly good and hte movie runs at a brisk 88 minutes. 7/10
Fright Night 2:New Blood arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 1.78:1. - This is a dark looking film and I did notice obvious tinkering with the palette. Colors have a cold slightly bluish cast to them with pops of deeper primaries for brief moments. Black levels were deep without sacrificing shadow detail. Fine detail was very good. I didn't see any signs of edge enhancement or noise. 8/10
Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - This is a very active and engaging track. LFE is deep and pulsing. Dialogue was crisp and audible at all times. Surrounds are used to fun effect for sense of environment, being pursued by a bloodthirsty vampire. Music cues are crystal clear and dynamic. 8.5/10
* Audio Commentary with Eduardo Rodriguez, Alison Rosenzweig, and Producer Michael Gaeta. - An informative track that is worht a listen depending on how much you enjoyed the feature film.
