In Alcon Entertainment’s fast-paced, high-adrenaline action thriller “Point Break,” a young FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), infiltrates a cunning team of thrill-seeking elite athletes – led by the charismatic Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez). The athletes are suspected of carrying out a spate of crimes in extremely unusual ways.
Deep undercover, and with his life in imminent danger, Utah strives to prove they are the architects of this string of inconceivable crimes.
First thing to get out of the way is the original Point Break was no classic but it was a fun ride that had dynamic characters and solid action. Point Break 3D is full of brilliant stunt work that leads to breathtaking scenery and extreme action. Where the film falters is in creating characters with some depth that you actually care about. I did like the message of the film about giving back to nature and trying to be one with it at the same time. So in closing this is worth a rental and possible purchase. I know for one I will revisit it just to see those amazing stunts captured in such beautiful settings. 7/10
Point Break 3D arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 2.40:1 - The color palette has a very stylized look for each location or interior of the movie. There are some very lush greens in the Angel Falls scene which contrast with the cliffs that Bodhi and Utah free climb. Whites were crisp in the Swiss Alps. Black levels were consistently deep while shadow delineation performance was good. Where the image really shines is in the wide shots of the stunning on location footage with fine details in rocks, grass fields, mountains and waterfalls popping off the screen.
The 3D presentation gives a problem free image and adds a nice amount of depth to the Utah desert and Angels Falls in Venezuela. 9/10
Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track. - Dialogue reproduction was crisp and well defined. Surround channels were almost constantly engaged with waves barreling down on a surfer, wind blowing in all directions and more subtle environmental effects. The LFE Channel excels in making you feel as though waves and thunder are crashing down on you or an entire cliff side blew up and is chasing after you with huge rocks and boulders. The track is an aural assault that I found thrilling to listen to. 9.5/10
