In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger to collaborate with the FBI in order to eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power and become one of the most ruthless and dangerous gangsters in Boston history.
Black Mass arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the aspect ratio of 2.40:1 - Colors have a subdued 70's look to them with browns, yellows and oranges. There are flashes of brilliant blue and crisp whites. Skin tones appear natural. The image is clearly defined and rich in detail, especially revealing the makeup work done to transform Depp into the unsettling Bulger. No compression artifacts to speak of. 9/10
Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. - The dialogue was placed front and center with a crisp presentation throughout the film that had no trouble handling the Boston accents. Surrounds are used for environmental effects that help bring the city to life. The LFE channel adds tight and effective bass when the violence ramps up, it also adds welcomed depth to the score and music tracks. 8.5/10
