Public Enemies - Blu-ray Disc Review

***SYNOPSIS*** From award-winning director Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) comes the film inspired by one of the country’s most captivating and infamous outlaws — John Dillinger. Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean series) stars as the charismatic and elusive bank robber marked by the FBI as America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) plays Billie Frechette, the only woman capable of capturing his heart. Hunted relentlessly by top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale, The Dark Knight), Dillinger engages in an escalating game of outrunning and outgunning the FBI, culminating in an explosive, legendary showdown.

***VIDEO QUALITY***Presented in 1080p using the VC-1 Video codec in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio Public Enemies comes home in a fine transfer.Due to the film being shot with HD cameras there is not the usual warm feel of being shot on film, with an artificial feel sometimes. That being said this Blu-ray transfer offers outstanding color with perfect skintones.Close up details are very good highlighting the textures of the clothing from the era.Black levels were deep and rich but is marred in a few instances where garish noise was noticed in darker scenes.Overall a solid presentation that is faithful to the source earning a 9/10

***AUDIO QUALITY***Public Enemies is presented with an excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.Everything on this track is pretty much perfect.Aggressive bass accompanied the shootouts of the film with every shot fired from the Tommy guns booming like a canon was shot instead. While being almost too aggressive the bass channel remained tight and precise.Surround effects added to the thrilling chases.Dialogue was crisp throughout.Another strength is the musical score from Elliot Goldenthal which supports the film with great subtlety that never overpowers the action on screen.Without a doubt the best aspect of this Blu-ray release is this DTS-HD MA track. 10/10
