From the very first episode "Modern Family" lets you know that this isn't the typical, family comedy. The cast is pitch perfect and includes the always great Ed O' Neill(Jay), the hilariously, breakout performance of Ty Burrell (Phil), the gorgeous Sofia Vargara (Gloria), the superb straight man work of Julie Bowen(Claire) are complemented with the best ensemble cast for a comedy today. I love Sofia's adorable lovesick son Manny, he is wise beyond his years and always provides a true laugh. The show focuses on three relationships that all tie together into one big "Modern Family". The most refreshing one being that of Cameron and Mitchell, two life partners who have just adopted a beautiful Asian baby girl, named Lilly. Mitchell is the son of Jay and the speech Jay gives to the couple at the end of the first episode is funny and heartwarming at the same time. The great work of Eric Stonestreet (Cameron) even garnered him an Emmy win for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy. The first season as a whole is a real treat to watch and there is not a bad episode the bunch. I give "Modern Family" my highest recommendation.10/10
"Modern Family" arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The original HD broadcasts have always looked pretty good, but seeing the series on Blu-ray it really shines. The vibrancy in colors was quite striking, with flawless color saturation. The bright shirts that Cameron has a penchant to wear pop off the screen. Deep, rich blacks were consistent throughout. Fine detail is excellent as well, I was even able to notice individual fibers on clothing. I noticed no signs of compression or artificial enhancement. A superb presentation overall.10/10
Audio is provided by a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. This is a well done track for being a TV single camera comedy. Dialogue is key here and it was crisp and clean at all times, even when things get a little hectic between family members. Surround usage is kept to a minimum, while a few pans between the front speakers is about all your going to hear. Bass is pretty low key but is okay when the opening theme score kicks in. Overall a clean, if underwhelming track.7/10
